Lawyer (Advokat)

National

To work as a lawyer (advokat) or use the title 'advokat' in Sweden, you must be admitted as a member of the Swedish Bar Association (Sveriges advokatsamfund). This is regulated by the Code of Judicial Procedure (Rättegångsbalken). Basic requirements include a law degree (jur. kand or juristexamen) and at least three years of practical qualified legal work at a law firm or in private practice.Lawyers from EU countries, EEA, or Switzerland can either register as an EU lawyer to practice under their home country title, or apply to become a Swedish lawyer after demonstrating sufficient knowledge of the Swedish legal system or having practiced law in Sweden for three years while registered as an EU lawyer. Decisions on admission and registration are made by the Board of the Swedish Bar Association.

Notification of Electronic Communications Services (Telephony and Internet)

If your business provides telephony, internet access, or other electronic communications services, you must notify the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) before starting operations. This applies to internet service providers, VoIP operators, mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), and similar businesses offering communications services to the public.After notification, you must pay a processing fee and annual supervision fees to PTS. Registered providers are subject to regulatory requirements under the Electronic Communications Act (2022:482), including consumer protection rules, number portability obligations, and data retention requirements. PTS maintains a public register of all notified providers.

Authorized Interpreter

To work as an authorized interpreter in Sweden, you must pass a competency test and a probity assessment administered by Kammarkollegiet (the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency). Authorization is available in around 50 languages and serves as a recognized quality mark that gives you priority for government and court assignments.The competency test evaluates your language skills, interpreting technique, and knowledge of Swedish society and terminology. Authorized interpreters can also apply for specialist certification in legal or healthcare interpreting. If you hold interpreter authorization from another EEA country or Switzerland, you can apply for recognition of your qualifications in Sweden.

Authorized Translator

To work as an authorized translator in Sweden, you must pass Kammarkollegiet's translation examination and probity assessment. Authorized translators have the exclusive right to certify translations, which are required for official documents submitted to Swedish authorities, courts, and public institutions.The examination tests your ability to translate legal, economic, and general texts accurately. Authorization carries a statutory duty of confidentiality and gives priority for government contracts. Kammarkollegiet supervises authorized translators and can revoke authorization for misconduct. Translators authorized in another EEA country or Switzerland can apply for recognition of their qualifications.

Certified Energy Expert

National

To perform energy performance inspections and issue energy declarations (energideklarationer) for buildings in Sweden, you must be a certified energy expert. Certification is issued by accredited certification bodies after Boverket (the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning) has approved your qualifications.Energy declarations are mandatory when selling, renting out, or constructing buildings larger than 250 square meters. As a certified energy expert, you inspect the building's energy use and suggest improvements. Certification must be renewed periodically. If you have qualifications from another EEA country or Switzerland, Boverket must validate your credentials before you can apply for certification.

Real Estate Agent

To work as a real estate agent or conduct real estate agency operations in Sweden, registration with the Swedish Estate Agents Inspectorate (Fastighetsmäklarinspektionen, FMI) is required. Both individual agents and agency companies must be registered.For registration as a real estate agent, you must meet requirements for education as well as integrity and suitability. An annual fee must be paid to remain registered. Agency companies must also meet requirements for integrity and suitability, which includes financial responsibility and that the company has not been involved in criminal activity. These requirements also apply to persons who own and operate the company. FMI supervises and can impose sanctions such as reminders, warnings, or revocation of registration for violations of the Real Estate Agents Act and good real estate practice.

Travel Agency, Tour Operator

Those who sell or offer package tours or linked travel arrangements must comply with the Package Travel Act (paketreselagen) and the Travel Guarantee Act (resegarantilagen). Travel operators are required to notify their activities to the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet) and arrange travel guarantees that ensure travelers can receive compensation if parts of their trip cannot be fulfilled due to the tour operator becoming insolvent.The travel guarantee must cover all advances paid by travelers, other services included in the contract, and in some cases also costs for repatriation. Kammarkollegiet administers the travel guarantee system and the Consumer Agency (Konsumentverket) provides information about the Package Travel Act.

Service of Process Company

A service of process company (delgivningsföretag) delivers legal documents such as court summons, official notices, and other legal papers to individuals on behalf of courts and authorities. To operate this type of business, you need authorization from the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen).All personnel at the company must be individually approved, including the manager, board members, and substitutes. The assessment covers personal suitability and criminal background. Four regional County Administrative Boards handle authorization based on where the company's management is located. They also supervise authorized companies and can revoke authorization if requirements are no longer met.
