Authorized Interpreter

To work as an authorized interpreter in Sweden, you must pass a competency test and a probity assessment administered by Kammarkollegiet (the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency). Authorization is available in around 50 languages and serves as a recognized quality mark that gives you priority for government and court assignments.

The competency test evaluates your language skills, interpreting technique, and knowledge of Swedish society and terminology. Authorized interpreters can also apply for specialist certification in legal or healthcare interpreting. If you hold interpreter authorization from another EEA country or Switzerland, you can apply for recognition of your qualifications in Sweden.

Requirements for Authorization

  • Knowledge test: Written test that examines the interpreter's knowledge
  • Skill test: Oral test in interpretation between Swedish and a foreign language
  • Probity assessment: Check of register extracts from the Swedish Enforcement Authority and Police Authority (for residents in Sweden), corresponding certificates required from residents abroad
  • Special competence: Possibility to apply for proof as legal interpreter or healthcare interpreter

Application and Procedure

  • Application period: Application must be made during the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency's established application period
  • Fee: Application is subject to a fee
  • Assessment: After application, applicants are called to the authorization test
  • Recognition: Persons with authorization from EEA country or Switzerland can apply for recognition
