Gas Connection Request

A gas connection request is an application to the network operator to connect an existing property to the gas network. Since July 1, 2018, new buildings generally cannot be connected to the gas network under the policy of gas-free construction (gasloos bouwen). Exceptions are possible only in specific circumstances, such as when there is no economically feasible alternative.

For existing buildings that need a new or modified gas connection, you submit your request to the regional network operator. The Gaswet currently governs this procedure. Note that the Gaswet is expected to be replaced by the Energiewet from January 2026, which will consolidate gas and electricity regulation into a single framework. Costs are borne by the applicant.

Requirements

  • Legal basis: Article 44 Gas Act (Gaswet) regulates the connection obligation of network operators
  • Ownership or permission: You must be the owner of the property or have permission from the owner
  • Technical feasibility: The property must be technically connectable to the gas network
  • Building permit: For new construction, a valid building permit is often required

Procedure

  • Submit application: Submit the request to the regional network operator (e.g., Liander, Stedin, Enexis)
  • Quote: The network operator assesses the application and sends a quote with costs and schedule
  • Agreement: Upon agreement with the quote, a contract is concluded
  • Installation: The network operator installs the gas connection according to the agreed schedule
  • Delivery: After delivery, the property can use the gas network
