Food Establishment
A food establishment is a business that handles food commercially and must be registered with the municipality. This includes restaurants, cafes, bakeries, shops, food trucks, food carts, catering companies, wholesale operations, and e-commerce food businesses.
Registration is required to ensure food safety is maintained and that the business complies with applicable food hygiene regulations. If the business uses drinking water from its own source or well, this must also be registered. Each fixed location must be registered separately with its respective municipality. Mobile food businesses, such as food trucks, only need to register in the municipality where the main operations are conducted.
Requirements
- Registration: The business must be registered with the municipality at least two weeks before starting operations.
- Fee: A registration fee must be paid in connection with the notification.
- Food hygiene: The business must comply with the Swedish Food Agency's regulations on food hygiene (LIVSFS 2005:20).
- Drinking water: If an own source or well is used, this must also be registered.
Procedure
- Notification: Notification is made to the municipality at least two weeks before the business starts.
- Processing time: If the municipality has not responded within two weeks, the business may start anyway.
- Confirmation: Once the municipality has confirmed registration, operations may begin.
- Supervision: The municipality conducts regular supervision of registered food establishments.
