Approval of Facility for Organic Fertilizers

Facilities that manufacture, store, package or distribute organic fertilizers, soil amendments or soil products containing animal components or manure must be approved by the Swedish Board of Agriculture. This is necessary to ensure that products do not risk entering the feed chain or spreading disease.

The approval normally costs 9,000 SEK and must be obtained before the facility is put into operation. Those responsible for an approved facility must also pay an annual control fee. The rules also include requirements for processing and traceability to protect animal and public health.

Requirements

Procedure

  • Step 1: Read about requirements for fertilizers and soil amendments with animal content on the Swedish Board of Agriculture's website
  • Step 2: Prepare application documentation with information about the facility, processes and traceability system
  • Step 3: Apply for approval with the Swedish Board of Agriculture and pay fee (9,000 SEK)
  • Step 4: The Swedish Board of Agriculture reviews the application and conducts any inspection
  • Step 5: Upon approval, the facility may be put into operation; annual control fee applies
