Inspection of Tanks and Pipelines for Flammable Liquids

If your business stores flammable liquids in tanks or pipelines, these must be inspected regularly by an accredited inspection body. This applies to above-ground and underground tanks, associated pipelines, and other containers for flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel, and heating oil.

You are responsible for ensuring inspections are carried out at the required intervals. Installation inspections are required before a new tank or pipeline is put into use, and recurring inspections take place at intervals of 6 or 12 years depending on the type of installation. Contact a Swedac-accredited inspection body to schedule an inspection.

Requirements

  • Installation inspection: Required before any new or modified tank/pipeline is put into use
  • Recurring inspection: Every 6 years for underground tanks, every 12 years for above-ground tanks (intervals may vary)
  • Accredited inspector: Inspections must be performed by a body accredited by Swedac
  • Regulations: MSBFS 2018:3 (now under MCF) governs inspection requirements

Procedure

  • Find an inspector: Search Swedac's register for accredited inspection bodies for flammable liquid tanks
  • Schedule inspection: Contact the inspection body to book a time
  • Inspection: The inspector checks the tank/pipeline for leaks, corrosion, and compliance with safety requirements
  • Certificate: A passed inspection results in an inspection certificate that you must keep on file
  • Defects: Any defects must be corrected, and a follow-up inspection may be required
