Use of Public Space
A permit is often required to use public space for activities, such as outdoor seating, construction sites, or signs. Public space includes public roads and streets, squares, parks, and other public places as well as outdoor or indoor areas such as large public parking lots, indoor squares, and shopping galleries under Chapter 1, Section 2 of the Public Order Act (ordningslagen, OL).
The police are the licensing authority for the use of public space. Applications are submitted to the police in the county where the permit is to be valid.
What Requires a Permit
- Outdoor seating: Placement of tables, chairs, and serving equipment in public space
- Construction sites: Temporary construction facilities or materials on public land
- Signs: Advertising and information signs in public space
- Public spaces: Public roads, streets, squares, parks, parking lots, indoor squares, and galleries
Application Procedure
- Licensing authority: The police in the county where the permit is to be valid
- Application: Via e-service on the police website, email, or letter
- Processing: The police review the application and decide on the permit
- Conditions: The permit may be subject to specific conditions
