Work Equipment Inspection

Employers are legally required to regularly maintain and have work equipment such as machines, tools and other apparatus inspected. This is laid down in the Working Conditions Decree (Arbeidsomstandighedenbesluit) and aims to ensure the safety of employees.

The inspection obligation applies to all work equipment that may pose a risk to the safety and health of employees. The frequency of inspection depends on the type of work equipment and the intensity of use. Examples include forklifts, cranes, lifting equipment, scaffolding and personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • Regular inspection: Work equipment must be inspected according to established schedules
  • Qualified inspector: Inspections must be carried out by a qualified person or certified body
  • Maintenance: In addition to inspection, regular maintenance is mandatory
  • Registration: Inspection reports and maintenance logs must be kept

Inspection Procedure

  • Risk analysis: Determine which work equipment must be inspected
  • Inspection schedule: Establish an inspection schedule based on risks and intensity of use
  • Perform inspection: Have inspections carried out by experts
  • Documentation: Keep all inspection reports and remedy defects in time

Specific Work Equipment

  • Lifting equipment: Cranes, hoists, lifting straps and chains require annual inspection
  • Forklifts and reach trucks: Annual inspection by certified body
  • Scaffolding: Annual inspection by expert
  • Personal protective equipment: Regular checks and replacement when worn
