Animal Transport Document

An animal transport document (dierenvervoersdocument) is a mandatory document that must be maintained during the transport of animals. This document contains information about the transport, the animals, care during transport, and the responsible persons.

The obligation to maintain this document follows from EU Regulation 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport. The document is mandatory for animal transporters, both for commercial and non-commercial transport, depending on the distance and duration of transport. The purpose is to ensure animal welfare during transport and enable inspection.

Requirements

  • Transport information: Details about departure location, destination, date and time of departure
  • Animal details: Number, species, and identification of transported animals
  • Care: Information about feed, water, and rest periods during transport
  • Responsible persons: Identification of transporter and person responsible for animal welfare
  • Fitness: Confirmation that animals are fit for transport

Procedure

  • Completion: The document must be completed in full before transport
  • Carry: The document must be carried throughout the entire transport
  • Storage: After completion, the document must be retained for a certain period
  • Inspection: The document must be shown to inspection authorities upon request
