National Monument Maintenance Loan

If you are the owner of a national monument (rijksmonument), you may apply for a loan for the maintenance or restoration of that monument under certain conditions. National monuments are protected buildings or objects of national cultural and historical importance.

The scheme is administered by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. In addition to loans, there are also subsidy options and contributions from various funds available for monument owners.

Requirements

  • Status: The building or object must be designated as a national monument (rijksmonument).
  • Ownership: You must be the owner or leaseholder of the national monument.
  • Purpose: The loan is intended for maintenance, restoration or repair of the national monument.
  • Legal basis: Article 7.8 Heritage Act (Erfgoedwet).

Procedure

  • Application: Submit an application to the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE).
  • Assessment: The RCE assesses whether the monument qualifies and whether the work is compatible with its heritage value.
  • Decision: You will receive a decision stating the conditions and the loan amount.
  • Implementation: After approval, you can have the work carried out according to the agreed conditions.
