Landscape Architect
If you want to use the title paysagiste-concepteur (landscape architect) in France, you must hold either a diplôme d'État de paysagiste or a diplôme d'ingénieur en paysage from an approved national school, or obtain an authorization from the Ministry of Ecological Transition based on recognized professional experience. The title has been protected since the law of August 8, 2016 on biodiversity recovery.
You must apply for authorization to use the title before practicing under it. Note that this is a title protection, not an activity restriction: anyone can perform landscape architecture work, but only authorized professionals may call themselves paysagiste-concepteur. The diploma requires five years of higher education after the baccalauréat, covering cultural, scientific and technical aspects of landscape design.
Access Requirements
- State Diploma in Landscape Architecture (diplôme d'État de paysagiste): 3-year program accessible after bac+2 at four national schools (Versailles-Marseille, INSA Centre-Val-de-Loire, Bordeaux, Lille). Tuition fees range from €601 to €1,987 per year for non-scholarship students.
- Engineering Diploma in Landscape (diplôme d'ingénieur en paysage): 3 to 5-year program accessible post-baccalaureate or later, awarded by AGROCAMPUS OUEST.

Regulation and Professional Standards

- Insurance: No legal obligation to insure for permanent practice, but may be required depending on the mission (professional liability insurance, ten-year guarantee insurance).
- Best practices standard: Afnor BP X50-787 standard established by the French Federation of Landscape in 2009.
- Remedies: ENIC-NARIC Centre for academic recognition, SOLVIT for disputes with EU Member State administrations.
