Earthworks
Earthworks (terrassement) involves modifying the natural terrain relief and preparing the ground for construction, landscaping, or infrastructure projects. If the work affects building structures, you need a professional qualification (CAP, BEP, or three years of experience) to operate independently.
You must register as an artisan through the guichet unique managed by INPI. Décennale (ten-year liability) insurance is mandatory when earthworks are connected to construction projects. You must also comply with strict safety regulations on work sites, particularly regarding excavation depth, shoring, and the protection of underground utilities. A DICT declaration is required before any digging to locate buried networks.
Professional Qualifications
- Without Construction: No qualification required if no structure is built
- With Construction: CAP Equipment Operators, BEP Public Works, BP Equipment Operator, DUT Civil Engineering, professional license, or engineering degree
- Alternative: 3 years effective professional experience in an EU/EEA state
- Registration: With trades and crafts register (RMA) or commercial register (RCS)
Safety and Insurance Obligations
- Ten-Year Insurance: Mandatory before construction starts, covers damages for 10 years after delivery
- Worker Safety: Risk assessment, equipment adaptation, collective protection measures
- Young Workers: Prohibition of certain dangerous work (height, extreme temperatures, chemical agents)
- Operating Authorization: Required for lifting equipment (cranes, construction machinery, platforms)
- Asbestos Removal: Protection of exposed workers, limitation of asbestos fiber spread
Craft Titles
- Craftsman: CAP/BEP diploma or 3 years professional experience in the trade
- Master Craftsman: Master's certificate + 2 years practice, or 10 years experience with recognized expertise
- Best Craftsman of France: Level III state diploma certifying high qualification, awarded after competition
