Every business premises in Finland is subject to periodic fire inspections carried out by the regional rescue department (pelastuslaitos). The inspection interval depends on your business type and risk level, ranging from one to ten years. Higher-risk operations like restaurants, hotels, and manufacturing facilities are inspected more frequently.During the inspection, a fire inspector reviews your fire safety equipment, escape routes, emergency plans, and general compliance with the Rescue Act. You will receive a written report of any deficiencies and a deadline to fix them. Preparing in advance by maintaining fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, clear exit routes, and an up-to-date rescue plan helps ensure a smooth inspection. Fire inspections for businesses are a paid service.

The operator must draw up an evacuation safety report for spaces where the functional capacity or mobility of residents is lower than normal. The report must be prepared before commencing operations in hospitals, retirement homes, care institutions, closed penal institutions, and service and supportive housings.The report must record how preparedness for hazardous situations and evacuation arrangements take into account the use of the building, the functional capacity of persons, and other factors affecting evacuation safety. The report must be updated at least every three years or when operations change substantially.
